Mounting the Silentum acoustic absorbers

Ding Dong! The time has come, the haulage company is at the door and your acoustic panels are being delivered. Now it's time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Here we show you step by step how to install your new absorbers.

Five important facts before ordering / installation

  1. Do you want to reduce unwanted reverberation in your living room, optimise the sound of your hi-fi system or put a stop to office noise?

→ Then acoustic absorbers are the right solution.

  2. Do you want to prevent the sound from your home studio or home cinema from annoying your neighbours?

→ To solve this acoustic problem, you need to think about the right sound insulation (structural measures).

  3. Can you hear every step the neighbours above you take?

→ This is also a structural issue that can only be remedied with the right insulation.

Often the so-called Direct sound perceived as noise: For example, the rattling printer or office colleagues talking on the phone and discussing.

The basic rule: If your eye can see it, your ear can hear it. The sound in the room is transmitted directly to the ear without shielding. Acoustic Partition walls can make a big difference here.

Not an easy question to answer. The most important thing here: In addition to direct sound, there are also sound reflections: Sound is reflected back into the room from walls, ceilings and furniture.

You can use various methods (e.g. the mirror method) to find out how to place your acoustic absorbers effectively to avoid sound reflections.

  • Of course, it is really precise when a professional acoustician measures the reverberation time and calculates the required area for your room.
  • As an alternative we offer you our Acoustic calculatorwith which you can estimate how many modules you need by means of a listening test and reverberation time curve.
  • You can use the following thumb times pi calculation for an initial estimate:

    • Slight reverberation:
10% of the wall and ceiling surface as an absorber surface

    • Increased reverberation:
15% of the wall and ceiling surface as an absorber surface

    • Strong reverberation:
25% of the wall and ceiling surface as an absorber surface
  • When selecting the panels, be sure to consider the desired installation method.

    • Wall mounting vs. ceiling mounting: The mounting profiles for the two types of mounting differ in order to ensure optimum stability for the respective application.

    • Horizontal alignment vs. vertical alignment of the panelsThe mounting strips on the back of the absorbers are already fitted by us. To ensure the alignment is correct, we need to know whether you want to mount the panels upright or on edge.

    • Alignment of panels with lamella felt: Please also pay attention to the desired seam direction of the slats. Depending on the module, these run either across the module width or the module length.

Tools-and-materials
  • Drill (with extension cable if necessary)
  • Hammer
  • Cordless screwdriver (or drill with screwdriver attachment)
  • Possibly: Ladder
  • Screws (min. 5x60mm)
  • Dowels (Ø min. 8mm)

Make sure to adapt the fixing material to your substrate (e.g. cavity dowels for plasterboard walls etc.)

Important notes!

  • When cutting, make sure that no shavings get onto the felt surface, as these can be very hard to remove.
    wool can adhere.
  • At least one second person is required to install the panels; a total of four people are recommended for larger formats.

Overview wall mounting and ceiling mounting

Wall mounting

If you wish, acoustic absorbers can be fitted with the appropriate wall or ceiling mounting set.

With slatted panels, the running direction of the slats changes depending on the mounting direction.

Horizontal wall mounting

Due to the different running directions, there are two different modular types here. Both panels have the same size, but a different slat running direction.

Ceiling mounting slats

Figure B: Vertical ceiling mounting

For ceiling installation with normal felt panels, the only decisive factor is how you want to attach the mounting strips.

Figure C: Horizontal ceiling mounting

In addition to the direction of the mounting strips, the running direction of the slats is also important for louvre panels. Therefore, before ordering and installing, check exactly what the direction should be.

Assembly steps with prefabricated assembly sets

Assembly instructions

1. follow the installation instructions: For each order, suitable assembly instructions are enclosed with the order.

Measuring

2. measure distances: To insert the panels later (step 5), you will need some space for manoeuvring:

  • For wall mounting, plan an additional wall clearance of approx. 4-5 cm from above.
  • For ceiling mounting, you need an additional distance of around 5-6 cm to the side of the walls.

There are already drill holes on the mounting strips on the panels. Draw the corresponding positions for the drill holes on the wall.

Drilling

3. drill holes: Drill the holes in the wall or ceiling to attach the mounting strips.

Set dowels

4. insert dowels: Use a hammer to countersink the dowels flush into the wall or ceiling.

If the masonry is poor or sandy, you should fix the plug in place with adhesive.

Attach absorber

5. hook in the absorber:

The mounting strips are attached to the absorbers at the factory, making installation very quick:

  • For wall mounting: Lift panel by panel onto the wall and let each one slide into the wall mounting from top to bottom.
  • For ceiling mounting: Lift panel by panel to the ceiling and let each one slide into the ceiling suspension.
Fixing

6. fixing: For ceiling installation, place a screw on each profile side of the mounting rails to secure the absorbers against unintentional movement.

This is not necessary for wall mounting.

Alternative mounting options

If you have ordered your absorbers without a mounting kit, you can opt for an alternative mounting option. For example, many of our partners or customers have opted for installation with Chain or wire rope suspension decided, or the panels by means of Feet used as partition walls or mobile wall elements.
